Session Overview

Web Services Technology & Standards Updates

Track: Web services Workshop
Tuesday May/22/2007
13:00 - 16:00

The afternoon session is spent with a number of key individuals involved in the development of standards and products based on Web Services. Critical to this will be information drawn from major projects that have specified Web Services as part of their solution.

In this year's session, focus is being placed on non-traditional applications including:-
- oBIX and BACnet WS
- NBIMS and OGC
- GridWise Interoperability
- Security issues
- WS Components

Attendees to this session will gain an understanding on the breadth of technologies and standards that will start to converge and bring forth the broad implementation of Web Services in buildings and energy applications.

Presentation (pdf)

oBIX provides a small tight extensible object model for accessing control system functions over the web. oBIX must now develop standard contracts to make embedded systems more accessible to the non-domain user. In part, oBIX will do this by discovering the interactions with several large standards efforts in allied spaces, including NBIMS, GridWise AC, and Emergency Management. These interactions will drive implementations away from traditional hierarchies and toward service orientation. If we have time, we will walk through one of the emergency management scenarios for agency/intelligent building interaction.

The NBIMS Committee exists to dramatically reduce the time and cost caused by errors and inefficiencies in the use and exchange of information during the conception, design, construction, operation and reuse of facilities. To accomplish this mission, the National Building Information Standards (NBIMS) Project Committee is knitting together the broadest and deepest constituency of building-related professionals and industry associations ever assembled. NBIMS is using an open consensus process to deliver consistent ‘business views’ of information needed by all parties throughout all phases of the cradle to cradle process and to provide a Standard that can be used in business agreements and in direct computer application exchanges. This presentation is an opportunity for building systems engineering and controls communities and the NBIMS Initiative to become more familiar and investigate synergies.
