Session Overview
Background: Physical & Logical Security
Track: Pervasive Security Roundtable
Thursday May/24/2007
9:00 - 10:30
As the IT (Information Technology) industry evolved during the 80s and 90s, the IT industry was facing a new challenge; it was being asked to take responsibility for a new kind of asset–non-physical assets (files, databases and other information) that were becoming more valuable as IT started to spread as a core business tool in the majority of organizations.
Out of this came the notion of Physical and Logical security convergence.
This session will outline this development that is now one of the main driving forces in the security industry.
While this convergence fits within the scope of whole-building convergence, and the vision of Buildings 2.0, it is being presented here as a backdrop of opportunities being opened up for a broader and more pervasive security.

Convergence of building controls into the Ethernet and IP based infrastructure of buildings exposes building controllers, sensors, wired and wireless networks to new security risks. New and better IT security tools and correlation engines have converged to provide better security in Ethernet, wireless and IP networks. The convergence of IT security tools and systems with converged IP based building controls can form a synergy of security to protect building infrastructure. Proper planning and engineering can make this synergy to work not only for a more secure building and infrastructure, but also result in better building operations efficiencies through the correlation of security and building control data.
Mature event monitoring, identity management , digital video recording, and network security tools in the IT world can be converged with IP based building systems to create information from events, both security events and building controls events. Convergence of physical and logical security information, and convergence of building controller and sensor information, can work together to create knowledge about the operation, efficiency and safety of the information and people that work and reside within buildings.

Cisco IT has supported a global Physical Security deployment since 2002. As physical security equipment becomes more network centric, traditional deployment and support models must evolve also. This presentation looks at that the benefits and the issues involved with that evolution.
