Track Overview
Pervasive Security Roundtable
Track Leader: Ray Bernard
Thursday May/24/2007
The Internet has been one of the most phenomenal changes in how we now live our lives. From major corporations to B2B, commerce, personal communications and family entertainment, the Internet is now used in a pervasive manner to distribute information on a global basis with literally no barriers (excepting those imposed for political or social reasons in some corners of the world).
While the Internet has changed our lives, the true potential of the Internet is yet to be realized; the next wave of the Internet will come in many flavors. The most obvious change, one that we all individually strive for, is bandwidth and availability. Having seen the power of the Internet, we now want more and want it everywhere. This will spark the evolution of multi-MB or even GB networks to your homes and broadband in your pockets through mobile devices. The world of the Jetsons is nearly upon us. From a security perspective, this is basically more of the same: the need to secure even more assets, value-wise and quantity-wise.
This track will discuss the impact of Pervasive Security, presented by key experts from security, IT and Pervasive Internet.
Background: Physical & Logical Security
9:00 - 10:30
As the IT (Information Technology) industry evolved during the 80s and 90s, the IT industry was facing a new challenge; it was being asked to take responsibility for a new kind of asset–non-physical assets (files, databases and other information) that were becoming more valuable as IT started to spread as a core business tool in the majority of organizations.
Out of this came the notion of Physical and Logical security convergence.
This session will outline this development that is now one of the main driving forces in the security industry.
While this convergence fits within the scope of whole-building convergence, and the vision of Buildings 2.0, it is being presented here as a backdrop of opportunities being opened up for a broader and more pervasive security.

The New World of Identification
11:00 - 12:30
Biometric identification is now a standard type of technology being used to secure physical and logical assets, quite often in a converged matter by a combination of security and IT departments in most corporations.
With new mandates from the U.S. government for better identification technologies and standards, including FIP-201 is now necessary in all GSA (General Services Administration) facilities, and quite likely soon in an increasing number of non-government facilities.
This session will describe the current status of these developments, standards and technologies and will uncover for the attendees an array of opportunities, many of them brought about by implementing new technologies and solutions upon existing and green-field sites.

New Opportunities with Pervasive Security
14:00 - 15:30
Another evolution of the Internet over the coming years is the use of the Internet to connect a new class of network citizen: the smart, connected device.
This session will explore the opportunities in this new field, and discuss who and how these challenges are to be addressed, and the potential business that can be developed in product and solutions.

Discussion Panel on the Future of Security
16:00 - 17:30
Having covered a significan range of issues during this Roundtable, presenters from the day's sessions are invited to have an open and frank discussion and debate about the future and opportunities of Pervasive Security.
This session promises to be a very interesting discussion by leaders in this space.
