Track Overview

GridWise: Towards a Smart Electric Grid

Track Leader:  John J. Mc Gowan
Thursday May/24/2007

Fresh from the outcome of GridWeek, the GridWise track at ConnectivityWeek will explore the current status of smart grid developments in the US.

Presented by leading experts from the GridWise Architecture Council and the GridWise Alliance, this session will take a step by step and pragmatic look at current initiatives moving the U.S. electric industry to the adoption of smart grid technologies, as well as describe to the attendees the current state of legislative issues surrounding the smart grid.

Advances in Smart Grid Utility Practices

9:00 - 10:30

The smart grid is no longer a pure and long-term vision by the few, but a rapidly adopted practice by a broad spectrum of industry stakeholders. This session will outline the status of adoption, and the changes being seen specially surrounding the utility companies.

Presenters:

Interoperability and Regulation / Policy Issues

11:00 - 12:30

Interoperability lies at the heart of the future of a smart electric grid. Interoperability will provide the tool for a broad range of devices, systems and businesses to exchange real-time and valuable information that will make the grid more efficient and secure.

Interoperability is not limited to grid devices and systems, but is an end-to-end view from generation to consumption; from the source of central and distributed generation to appliances and consumers of electricity.

This session will present a number of leading experts who will describe the current status of regulation and policy issues that will help the deployment of interoperable systems across the whole spectrum of the electric delivery system.

Presenters:

GridWise Interoperability Framework

14:00 - 15:30

The GridWise Architecture Council is proposing a wide ranging and broad adoption of an Interoperability Framework that would provide a structure and principles for interoperability of significantly disparate standards, all to work in harmony to facilitate the efficient generation, distribution and use of electricity.

This session will present to the attendees, the concepts of the framework, and how attendees can include such a Framework as an overarching umbrella for all stakeholders involved in the creation and use of energy.

Presenters:

Value Proposition of a Smart Grid for End Users

16:00 - 17:30

Why is the smart grid needed, what are the benefits for the various stakeholders involved with electricity and more importantly why is it valuable to the users of electricity? These are core and often difficult questions that are often asked of the smart grid vision.

This session, led by experts in business and economics, will outline the value proposition of the smart grid for the broad range of players involved, and specifically for the end users, be it commercial, industrial or residential end-users.
